WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) — The Republican caucus was held on the evening of the 15th of local time in the midwestern U.S. state of Iowa. This is the first primary election of the United States 2024 presidential election, officially opened the prelude to the United States general election. According to a number of U.S. media estimates, former U.S. President Donald Trump will win the primary election.

In the Iowa Republican primary, the remaining suspense lies in who will come in second place, former U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

On the Democratic side, incumbent President Joe Biden is running for re-election. As the party challenger to replace Biden “chances are slim”, the Democratic Party primary is basically “going through the motions”, the party’s first primary will be held on 3 February in South Carolina.

Primary election is the first stage of the U.S. presidential election, the Democratic and Republican candidates during this period to compete for their parties’ presidential nomination. After the primary election, the two parties will hold their respective national congresses to formally nominate presidential and vice presidential candidates. The voting day for this year’s US election is 5 November.

A recent poll released by the Centre for the Study of American Public Affairs (CSAPA) shows that the American public’s confidence in American democracy remains at a low level. Among those surveyed, 87 per cent of Democrats believe that American democracy will be weakened if Trump is re-elected as US president; 82 per cent of Republicans have the same view of Biden’s re-election.
