Blast waves from a Myanmar military airstrike targeting Karen forces near the border damaged at least 17 homes and several public buildings across the Salween River in Thailand’s tambon Mae Sam Lap of Sob Moei district, local offiials said.

""

On Sunday morning, Mae Sam Lap pier on the Salween River was unusually quiet. Shops along the riverfront remained closed, boat services were temporarily suspended and only a handful of residents were seen in the community as officials fanned out to assess the damage.

It was caused by two 500-pound bombs dropped by Myanmar military aircraft late on Saturday on a Karen military position along the Salween River in Karen State, opposite Mae Sam Lap.

Sob Moei district chief Khamphan Mokthai ordered local administrators and security personnel to inspect the affected area.

The survey found broken windows, cracked walls and damaged ceilings at about 17 houses. Damage was also reported at the Mae Sam Lap health promotion hospital, a church, a child development centre and a tourist services building operated by the Mae Sam Lap tambon administrative organisation (TAO).

Pongpipat Meebenjamas, chairman of the Mae Sam Lap TAO, said the bombardment also affected a mosque, a Buddhist temple and a Christian church. Some buildings were struck by shrapnel and others damaged by the force of the explosions.

“The Thai government should introduce measures to ensure border residents can be confident of their safety. Residents are living in fear and continue to be affected by attacks,” he said.

Mr Pongpipat said clashes and military operations along the border had increasingly affected communities on the Thai side and urged the government to discuss measures with Myanmar authorities to stop airstrikes being carried out near the frontier.

Suparb Nuchkongkarn, kamnan of tambon Mae Sam Lap, said residents had been repeatedly warned of possible attacks and advised to closely monitor the situation. Villagers were told not to play loud music so they could hear warnings and approaching aircraft.

He said local authorities had designated Ban Huai Kong Kad School as an emergency safe area. Security agencies had prepared three locations to accommodate people fleeing fighting across the border if needed.

Mr Suparb said the situation highlighted the need for bomb shelters in border communities so residents could reach safety more quickly during emergencies.

Security authorities were preparing a formal protest letter to Myanmar over the incident, he said.
