Trump insists US won\u2019t rush talks with Tehran after rebukes from Republicans, including Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican<\/a>\u00a0hawks have issued a rare rebuke of\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0over his planned\u00a0peace deal<\/a>\u00a0with Iran, describing it as a \u201cdisaster\u201d and questioning why the US president launched the war in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allies of Trump who strongly backed his controversial decision to order war on Iran alongside Israel urged him to \u201chold the line\u201d this weekend, despite mounting economic costs and no sign of progress on many of the the initial objectives<\/a> set out by his administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Iranian government apparently in jubilant mood<\/a>, members of Trump\u2019s own party responded furiously to reports that a proposed deal contained major concessions from Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger Wicker, who chairs the Senate armed services committee, said the \u201crumored 60-day ceasefire\u201d would be a \u201cdisaster\u201d in a\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0on social media. \u201cEverything accomplished by Operation Epic Fury would be for naught,\u201d he added.



After suggesting on Saturday that a deal was within reach, Trump seemed to row back on Sunday morning, after the angry response from some corners of his party. Talks were progressing in an \u201corderly and constructive\u201d manner, the president insisted, adding: \u201cI have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stressing that a \u201cgood and proper\u201d deal was on the way, he later claimed \u201cnobody has seen it\u201d in a bid to quell criticism. \u201cIt isn\u2019t even fully negotiated yet,\u201d he said. \u201cSo don\u2019t listen to the losers, who are critical about something they know nothing about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had claimed on Saturday that a memorandum of understanding to end the war had been \u201clargely negotiated\u201d and was waiting to be finalized. The US president said on his Truth Social platform that the agreement would include opening of the strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for global trade, which Iran<\/a> has effectively shut since the US and Israel started the war in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the US president did not mention Iran\u2019s nuclear program and highly enriched uranium, despite repeatedly insisting that Tehran renounce any nuclear ambitions was a \u201cred line\u201d in negotiations to end the war. Iranian officials have sought to negotiate those matters at a later date.

The peace draft includes a 60-day ceasefire extension, during which the strait of Hormuz would be reopened, according to Axios<\/a>. Iran would agree to clear mines it deployed in the strait and allow ships to pass freely, and in exchange, the US would lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports. During that time Iran would also be able to freely sell oil and negotiations would be held on the nuclear issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The apparent concessions from Washington have triggered alarm among several Republican foreign policy hawks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump, warned: \u201cIf a deal is struck to end the Iranian conflict because it is believed that the strait of Hormuz cannot be protected from Iranian terrorism and Iran still possesses the capability to destroy major Gulf oil infrastructure, then Iran will be perceived as being a dominate force requiring a diplomatic solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perception of Iran being able to \u201cterrorize\u201d the strait of Hormuz, and its ability to damage oil infrastructure across the Gulf, amounts to a \u201cmajor shift of the balance of power in the region and over time will be a nightmare for Israel\u201d, Graham argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlso, it makes one wonder why the war started to begin with if these perceptions are accurate,\u201d he added, stressing the need for the US to \u201cget this right\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Cotton, who chairs the Senate intelligence committee reposted Graham\u2019s comments, while Texas senator Ted Cruz said he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d by reports about the emerging agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the result of all that is to be an Iranian regime \u2013 still run by Islamists who chant \u2018death to America\u2019 \u2013 now receiving billions of dollars, being able to enrich uranium & develop nuclear weapons, and having effective control over the Strait of Hormuz, then that outcome would be a disastrous mistake,\u201d Cruz wrote<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, he said, \u201cshould continue to hold the line, defend America & enforce the red lines he has repeatedly drawn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to a Trump supporter who criticized his position, and said \u201cno one asked\u201d for his opinion, Cruz replied that \u201cyoung political grifters pushing Iran appeasement are not remotely helping the President.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criticizing Trump\u2019s agenda often prompts a swift backlash from the president and his senior officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a second statement on Sunday, Senator Graham hailed a \u201cbrilliant proposal by President Trump\u201d, suggesting that several countries in the Middle East could join the Abraham accords<\/a>, diplomatic agreements brokered in 2020 in which several Arab nations agreed to recognize Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a brilliant move by President Trump,\u201d declared Graham, publicly warning countries including Saudi Arabia that failure to join the accords would be a \u201cmajor miscalculation\u201d.

Mike Pompeo, who served as secretary state and CIA director under the first Trump administration, sharply criticized the deal being floated as \u201cnot remotely America First\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a harsh post<\/a> on X, he compared the terms to the those of the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated by the Obama administration, which Trump later abandoned, and has long chastised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s straightforward,\u201d Pompeo claimed. \u201cOpen the damned strait. Deny Iran access to money. Take out enough Iranian capability so it cannot threaten our allies in the region. Overdue. Let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s current secretary of state, Marco Rubio, hailed \u201csignificant\u201d progress on Sunday. \u201cI do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news,\u201d Rubio told reporters during a diplomatic visit to India.
