A bid to restore funding to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE<\/a>) and border patrol has been derailed by rows over a $1bn proposal for security measures tied to\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s White House ballroom and controversial plans to\u00a0create a $1.8bn \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US Senate<\/a> will not pass the $70bn legislation ahead of a 1 June deadline set by the US president, Republican senators told reporters on Thursday, as lawmakers leave Washington for the Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes amid backlash from members of Trump\u2019s own party against an attempt to latch funding for his ballroom project on to the immigration bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan prompted intense anxiety among congressional Republicans, who feared diverting taxpayer dollars toward Trump\u2019s \u201cEast Wing modernization project\u201d amid mounting\u00a0cost of living concerns<\/a>\u00a0across the US would risk alienating voters ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections.

Some Senate Republicans have also expressed concerns about a plan, announced on Monday, to create a secretive $1.776bn fund<\/a> \u2013 which critics<\/a> have argued is essentially a slush fund<\/a> \u2013 to compensate Trump allies as part of an agreement in which the president and his sons dropped a $10bn long-shot lawsuit against the US Internal Revenue Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t actually see any legal precedent for that,\u201d Republican senator Bill Cassidy, who lost his primary on Saturday<\/a> after an extraordinary intervention by Trump to secure his ouster, told reporters<\/a> earlier this week. \u201cWe are a nation of laws, you can\u2019t just make up things whole-piece.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senate Democrats\u00a0pledged to oppose the funding for Trump\u2019s ballroom<\/a>, and push \u201cvote after vote\u201d in an effort to force Republicans to publicly endorse it.

Republican John Thune, the US Senate<\/a> majority leader, acknowledged \u201congoing vote issues\u201d with the wider bill earlier on Wednesday, as the party\u2019s leaders try to gauge support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday, Chuck Schumer, the US Senate\u2019s top Democrat, accused\u00a0Republicans<\/a>\u00a0of trying to \u201csneak\u201d ballroom funding into the bill. \u201cThe American people caught them red-handed, and now they\u2019re trying to drop that hot potato,\u201d he said.

Trump, meanwhile, continued to claim the ballroom funding proposal under consideration was for \u201cnational security\u201d, including the drone port and bulletproof glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf they want to spend money securing the White House, I think it would be very much a good expenditure,\u201d the US president told reporters. Asked what if Congress doesn\u2019t sign off on the funds, Trump replied: \u201cWell, the White House won\u2019t be a very secure place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The East Wing of the White House was reduced to rubble<\/a> last year to make way for Trump\u2019s plan for a gilded ballroom. Polling has indicated that most Americans oppose the controversial project, which remains embroiled in litigation in federal court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere will never be another building like this built, that I can tell you,\u201d Trump told reporters on a\u00a0tour of the construction site<\/a>\u00a0earlier this week. Touting a string of corporate donors providing funds, he insisted: \u201cThis is a gift to the United States of America.\u201d
