About 300 protesters chanted \u201cwe need clean air, not another \u200bbillionaire!\u201d on Monday outside the Houston \u200chotel where many of the world’s top energy industry executives have gathered this week for the \u200blargest annual industry conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CERAWeek draws oil, \u200bgas and power company executives from \u2060around the world, in addition to top \u200bofficials, who this year include U.S. Energy \u200bSecretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
Members of 45 organizations from across the United States \u200bprotested at a park across the \u200bstreet from the conference hotel, said Chloe Torres, from \u200cCorpus \u2060Christi, Texas, of the Texas Campaign for the Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re suffering the consequences of hyperindustrialization,\u201d Torres said. “This is what has people \u200bgetting sicker. It\u2019s \u200ba \u2060huge strain on our lives. It\u2019s like they expect us to \u200bjust take it. We\u2019ve come \u200bhere \u2060to Houston to confront them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Houston police officers, some mounted on horses, were grouped around \u2060the \u200bfenced area where the \u200bactivists chanted \u201cshame, shame\u201d as conference attendees walked by.
