Democratic lawmakers on Thursday slammed\u00a0President Trump\u00a0<\/a>over comments he made about wanting to \u201cdrive housing prices up\u201d for people who own their homes, with one congresswoman telling followers that he \u201cdoesn\u2019t care about making your life more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a Cabinet meeting<\/a> earlier Thursday, the president said he wants to keep homeowners \u201cwealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to destroy the value of their homes so that somebody that didn\u2019t work very hard can buy a home,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to drive housing prices down. I want to drive housing prices up for people who own their homes. And they can be assured that\u2019s what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several Democrats in both the House and Senate clapped back at the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you trying to buy your first home? Trump wants your prices to go up,\u201d Sen. Tammy Duckworth <\/a>(D-Ill.) wrote on the social platform X<\/a>. \u201cBut sure Donald, keep saying affordability is a hoax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Jason Crow <\/a>(D-Colo.), who previously clashed<\/a> with the president over his appearance in a video in which he and other lawmakers told members of the military they can refuse illegal orders, also criticized Trump\u2019s remarks on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMillions of hardworking folks can\u2019t afford to buy\u2014and the President\u2019s tariffs are making it even more expensive,\u201d Crow wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Suzan DelBene <\/a>(D-Wash.) added in her own post<\/a>, \u201cMillions of families are struggling to afford a roof over their heads & Trump\u2019s response is to increase the price of housing. He doesn\u2019t care about making your life more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing prices have spiked recently, outpacing overall inflation. The median sale price of a home in December was $429,000, up by more than 28 percent relative to December 2020, according to data compiled by Redfin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has attempted to address the state of the housing market. Earlier this week, he issued an executive order<\/a> aimed at stopping Wall Street investors from buying and owning single-family homes, arguing that such investors have bought a \u201cgrowing share<\/a>\u201d of those properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHardworking young families cannot effectively compete for starter homes with Wall Street firms and their vast resources,\u201d Trump said in the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the president\u2019s comment Thursday still ruffled some feathers in Washington, as affordability appears poised to remain a key issue heading into the midterm elections later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s affordable housing plan is basically: Screw you,\u201d Rep.\u00a0Darren Soto\u00a0<\/a>(D-Fla.)\u00a0wrote on X<\/a>, while also sharing a video of the president\u2019s remarks. \u201cThis will float like a lead balloon in fast growing Central Florida.\u201d
