More than 2,000 cases have been confirmed in the U.S. so far this year. NBC News is updating case totals as new data arrives.

Measles is among the most contagious diseases in the world, and with\u00a0case counts in the United States ticking up<\/a>,\u00a0the country\u2019s on the verge of losing its measles elimination status<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News is tracking confirmed measles cases across the country with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Measles cases in the United States are the highest they\u2019ve been since the country eliminated the disease in 2000<\/a>. The U.S. has reported more than 2,000 cases since the start of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most cases this year are in Texas, which accounts for about 1 out of 2 reported infections.

\u201cElimination\u201d means the disease has not spread continuously for at least 12 months. And while sporadic outbreaks have occurred since 2000, recent case counts are nothing compared with the 27,000 cases reported in 1990 or the 450,000 cases reported in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, which marked a turning point for the contagious disease, which used to kill thousands every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
