Every two weeks, she\u2019d get a $900 paycheck from her employer, a contractor. Not much \u2014 but enough to cover rent in the house that she and her 11-year-old son share with five families, plus electricity, a cellphone and groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-12-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-12-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-12-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-12-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-12.png 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, it all ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she showed up at the job one morning, her boss told her that she couldn\u2019t work there anymore. The Trump administration had terminated President Joe Biden\u2019s humanitarian parole program, which provided legal work permits for Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans as well as Nicaraguans like Maria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel desperate,\u2019\u2019 said Maria, 48, who requested anonymity to talk about her ordeal because she fears being detained and deported. \u201cI don\u2019t have any money to buy anything. I have $5 in my account. I\u2019m left with nothing.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping crackdown on immigration is throwing foreigners like Maria out of work and shaking the American economy and job market. And it\u2019s happening at a time when hiring is already deteriorating amid uncertainty over Trump\u2019s erratic trade policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigrants do jobs \u2014 cleaning houses, picking tomatoes, painting fences \u2014 that most native-born Americans won\u2019t, and for less money. But they also bring the technical skills and entrepreneurial energy that have helped make the United States the world\u2019s economic superpower.<br><br>Trump is attacking immigration at both ends of spectrum, deporting low-wage laborers and discouraging skilled foreigners from bringing their talents to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he is targeting an influx of foreign workers that eased labor shortages and upward pressure on wages and prices at a time when most economists thought that taming inflation would require sky-high interest rates and a recession \u2014 a fate the United States escaped in 2023 and 2024.<br><br>\u201cImmigrants are good for the economy,\u2019&#8217; said Lee Branstetter, an economist at Carnegie-Mellon University. \u201cBecause we had a lot of immigration over the past five years, an inflationary surge was not as bad as many people expected.\u2019&#8217;<br><br>More workers filling more jobs and spending more money has also helped&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-jobs-economy-wages-gdp-trump-biden-fbd1f2ec89e84fdfaf81d005054edad0\">drive economic growth<\/a>&nbsp;and create still-more job openings. Economists fear that Trump\u2019s deportations and limits on even legal immigration will do the reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a July report, researchers Wendy Edelberg and Tara Watson of the centrist Brookings Institution and Stan Veuger of the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute calculated that the loss of foreign workers will mean that monthly U.S. job growth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Immigration-Policy-and-Its-Macroeconomic-Effects-in-the-Second-Trump-Administration.pdf?x85095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ccould be near zero or negative in the next few years.\u2019\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiring has already slowed significantly, averaging a meager 29,000 a month from June through August. (The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-economy-shutdown-trump-77afb7e7a6ef75c564f81cd611664271\">September jobs report has been delayed<\/a>&nbsp;by the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.) During the post-pandemic hiring boom of 2021-2023, by contrast, employers added a stunning 400,000 jobs a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, citing fallout Trump\u2019s immigration and trade policies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cbo-outlook-trade-tariffs-58a06e8b72aab4f145e2ca18f44549a4\">downgraded its forecast<\/a>\u00a0for U.S. economic growth this year to 1.4% from the 1.9% it had previously expected and from 2.5% in 2024.<br><br>\u2018We need these people\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goodwin Living, an Alexandria, Virginia nonprofit that provides senior housing, health care and hospice services, had to lay off four employees from Haiti after the Trump administration terminated their work permits. The Haitians had been allowed to work under a humanitarian parole program and had earned promotions at Goodwin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a very, very difficult day for us,\u201d CEO Rob Liebreich said. \u201cIt was really unfortunate to have to say goodbye to them, and we\u2019re still struggling to fill those roles.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liebreich is worried that another 60 immigrant workers could lose their temporary legal right to live and work in the United States. \u201cWe need all those hands,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cWe need all these people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goodwin Living has 1,500 employees, 60% of them from foreign countries. It has struggled to find enough nurses, therapists and maintenance staff. Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown, Liebreich said, is \u201cmaking it harder.\u2019\u2019<br><br>The ICE crackdown<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s immigration ambitions, intended to turn back what he calls an \u201cinvasion\u2019\u2019 at America\u2019s southern border and secure jobs for U.S.-born workers, were once viewed with skepticism because of the money and economic disruption required to reach his goal of deporting 1 million people a year. But legislation that Trump signed into law July 4 \u2014 and which Republicans call the One Big Beautiful Bill Act \u2014 suddenly made his plans plausible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law pours&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-budget-congress-trump-bill-e37bb0a5c5ca883438db349239a6c251\">$150 billion into immigration enforcement<\/a>, setting aside $46.5 billion to hire 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and $45 billion to increase the capacity of immigrant detention centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And his empowered ICE agents have shown a willingness to move fast and break things \u2014 even when their aggression conflicts with other administration goals.<br><br>Last month, immigration authorities raided a Hyundai battery plant in Georgia, detained 300 South Korean workers and showed video of some of them shackled in chains. They\u2019d been working to get the plant up and running, bringing expertise in battery technology and Hyundai procedures that local American workers didn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident enraged the South Koreans and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-trump-immigration-raid-foreign-investment-ddfbe7d34ffedf46a25fa648c96a0000\">ran counter to Trump\u2019s push to lure foreign manufacturers<\/a>&nbsp;to invest in America. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung warned that the country\u2019s other companies might be reluctant about betting on America if their workers couldn\u2019t get visas promptly and risked getting detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sending Medicaid recipients to the fields<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s farmers are among the president\u2019s most dependable supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But John Boyd Jr., who farms 1,300 acres of soybeans, wheat and corn in southern Virginia, said that the immigration raids \u2014 and the threat of them \u2014 are hurting farmers already contending with low crop prices, high costs and fallout from Trump\u2019s trade war with China, which has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/soybeans-trade-tariff-china-united-states-export-025792707c4e4e91d975f8558edae1d8\">stopped buying U.S. soybeans and sorghum.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou got ICE out here, herding these people up,\u2019\u2019 said Boyd, founder of the National Black Farmers Association . \u201c(Trump) says they\u2019re murderers and thieves and drug dealers, all this stuff. But these are people who are in this country doing hard work that many Americans don\u2019t want to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boyd scoffed at U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins\u2019 suggestion in July that U.S.-born&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc\/watch\/agriculture-secretary-suggests-medicaid-recipients-could-replace-immigrant-farmworkers-242956869684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medicaid recipients could head to the fields<\/a>&nbsp;to meet work requirements imposed this summer by the Republican Congress. \u201cPeople in the city aren\u2019t coming back to the farm to do this kind of work,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cIt takes a certain type of person to bend over in 100-degree heat.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration itself admits that the immigration crackdown is causing labor shortages on the farm that could translate into higher prices at the supermarket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe near total cessation of the inflow of illegal aliens combined with the lack of an available legal workforce,\u2019\u2019 the Labor Department said in an Oct. 2 filing the Federal Register, \u201cresults in significant disruptions to production costs and (threatens) the stability of domestic food production and prices for U.S consumers.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cYou\u2019re not welcome here\u2019\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jed Kolko of the Peterson Institute for International Economics said that job growth is slowing in businesses that rely on immigrants. Construction companies, for instance, have shed 10,000 jobs since May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose are the short-term effects,\u2019\u2019 said Kolko, a Commerce Department official in the Biden administration. \u201cThe longer-term effects are more serious because immigrants traditionally have contributed more than their share of patents, innovation, productivity.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially worrisome to many economists was Trump\u2019s sudden announcement last month that he was raising the fee on H-1B visas, meant to lure hard-to-find skilled foreign workers to the United States, from as little as $215 to $100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA $100,000 visa fee is not just a bureaucratic cost \u2014 it\u2019s a signal,\u201d Dany Bahar, senior fellow at the Center for Global Development, said. \u201cIt tells global talent: \u2018You are not welcome here.\u2019\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are already packing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Washington D.C., one H-1B visa holder, a Harvard graduate from India who works for a nonprofit helping Africa\u2019s poor, said Trump\u2019s signal to employers is clear: Think twice about hiring H-1B visa holders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man, who requested anonymity, is already preparing paperwork to move to the United Kingdom. \u201cThe damage is already done, unfortunately,\u2019\u2019 he said.<br><br>Reproduced from the Associated Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maria worked cleaning schools in Florida for $13 an hou [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":5662,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[4246,4970,1891],"class_list":["post-5661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-usa","tag-her","tag-she","tag-trump"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.0 -
