US President Donald Trump blames Democrats for looming federal layoffs as shutdown enters fifth day.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House has warned that mass layoffs of federal workers could begin if United States President Donald Trump concludes that negotiations with congressional Democrats to end a partial\u00a0government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0have reached a dead end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the shutdown entered its fifth day on Sunday, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNN\u2019s programme State of the Union that he believed there was still a chance Democrats would yield and avoid what could become a costly political and economic crisis.

\u201cPresident Trump and Russ Vought are lining things up and getting ready to act if they have to, but hoping that they don\u2019t,\u201d Hassett said, referring to the White House budget director. \u201cIf the president decides that the negotiations are absolutely going nowhere, then there will start to be layoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, speaking to reporters on Sunday, described the potential job cuts as \u201cDemocrat layoffs\u201d, saying, \u201cAnybody laid off, that\u2019s because of the Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump attended a US Navy anniversary ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday despite the ongoing government shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe, \u2018THE SHOW MUST GO ON!\u2019\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social before departing the White House for Naval Station Norfolk, calling it \u201ca show of Naval aptitude and strength\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the celebration risked becoming entangled in partisan tensions, as Trump accused Democrats of fuelling the shutdown and trying \u201cto destroy this wonderful celebration of the US Navy\u2019s Birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talks remain frozen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There have been no meaningful negotiations since Trump last met congressional leaders, with the impasse beginning on October 1 \u2013 the start of the federal fiscal year \u2013 after Senate Democrats rejected a short-term funding bill to keep government agencies open through November 21.

\u201cThey\u2019ve refused to talk with us,\u201d Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told the CBS programme Face the Nation, insisting that only renewed talks between Trump and congressional leaders could end the standoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democrats are demanding a permanent extension of enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and assurances that the White House will not unilaterally cut spending agreed to in any deal.

Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he was open to addressing the Democrats\u2019 concerns, but urged them to first back reopening the government. \u201cIt\u2019s open up the government or else,\u201d Thune told Fox News. \u201cThat\u2019s really the choice that\u2019s in front of them right now.\u201d

Trump said Republicans were also willing to discuss healthcare reform. \u201cWe want to fix it so it works. Obamacare has been a disaster for the people, so we want to have it fixed so it works,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No deal in sight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rank-and-file senators from both parties have held informal talks on healthcare and spending to break the deadlock, but progress has been minimal. \u201cAt this point, no,\u201d Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego told CNN when asked if lawmakers were closer to a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Senate is set to vote again on Monday on competing funding bills \u2013 one backed by the Republican-controlled House and one proposed by Democrats \u2013 though neither is expected to win the 60 votes required to advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Congressional Budget Office, nearly 750,000 federal employees face being furloughed as long as the shutdown continues, with total lost compensation estimated at $400m per day. While federal workers are guaranteed backpay under the 2019 Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, payments will only resume once the shutdown ends.
