The demonstrations, led by the AFL-CIO and dozens of other organizations, feature some 1,000 rallies, picnics, marches and other events to slam the \u201cbillionaire takeover\u201d of the U.S. government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Americans observe Labor Day, workers across the country are taking to the streets to protest President Donald Trump and other billionaires who, they say, are taking power away from the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cWorkers Over Billionaires\u201d protests,<\/a> led by the AFL-CIO, the nation\u2019s largest federation of unions, along with dozens of other organizations, kicked off on Monday a multiday mobilization featuring some 1,000 rallies, picnics, marches and other events. Advocates hope to amass momentum and support among workers against the Trump administration and the wealthier segment of Americans who stand to benefit the most from the president\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery single thing working people have won for ourselves in this country\u2019s history \u2014 it\u2019s not because we asked those in power,\u201d said Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, in a state of the union address last week. \u201cIt\u2019s not because they were handed to us. It\u2019s because we fought for them relentlessly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is behind the protests?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the AFL-CIO, groups like One Fair Wage, a nongovernmental nonprofit that advocates for restaurant workers; Newtown Action Alliance, a gun violence prevention advocacy group; and many local organizations have participated in the planning of the nationwide protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the \u201cBillionaires\u201d organizers are also part of May Day Strong, a coalition of labor unions, teachers associations and more that hosted a series of events and demonstrations protesting the administration on May 1, International Workers Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are they protesting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Advocates are railing against the \u201cbillionaire takeover\u201d in government, criticizing corporate influence along with what many activists label as authoritarian policies, including the targeting of immigrant workers and the deployment of military forces in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to show that there is opposition to the Trump-billionaire agenda in every community, big and small; it\u2019s not just cities that are united against what\u2019s happening\u2026 it\u2019s all towns, it\u2019s small towns that voted overwhelmingly for Trump,\u201d Saqib Bhatti, <\/a>executive director of Action Center on Race and the Economy, told USA Today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The May Day Strong Coalition wrote on its website a list of five demands<\/a> they are making, including the protection of Medicaid, Social Security and other programs for working people; an end to the attacks on immigrants and communities of color; and for the full funding of schools, health care and housing for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to NBC News\u2019 questions about \u201cWorkers Over Billionaires,\u201d the White House did not directly address the protests. But spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement that \u201cno one has done more for working men and women than President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnder President Trump\u2019s leadership, Republicans are once again the proud party of the American worker,\u201d Rogers said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt similarly touted Trump as a voice of the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump believes that American workers are the heart and soul of our economy and our national identity, which is why he\u2019s championed an agenda that puts them first always,\u201d Leavitt said in a separate statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are the protests happening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Demonstrations are being held in small towns and major cities across the U.S. A large group is expected to rally in front of Manhattan\u2019s Trump Tower, where the attendees are expected to call for a $30 an hour minimum wage. Down Fifth Avenue, organizers have planned an afternoon protest with multiple references to the acronym TACO, which stands for \u201cTrump Always Chickens Out.\u201d The protest is slated to feature Trump costumes, taco props and a \u201crestaurant in the street\u201d where participants will be serving up tacos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe rally will center the question workers are asking New York legislators \u2014 Which side are you on?\u201d according to a press release from One Fair Wage. \u201cTrump and the National Restaurant Association corporate lobby, or workers fighting for a living wage and an end to the subminimum wage for tipped workers?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Chicago, protests, which began at 11am<\/a>, have been centered around Trump\u2019s threats to \u201cstraighten out\u201d <\/a>the city with federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe federal government can do a lot to help Chicago,\u201d\u00a0Chicago Teacher\u2019s Union President Stacy Davis Gates<\/a>\u00a0said. \u201cWe\u2019re not asking for a militarized force. We\u2019re asking for SNAP benefits to be restored. We\u2019re asking for the Department of Education to be funded and resourced so that special education children have recourse when their school districts fail to educate them appropriately.\u201d
