Battalion of active-duty marines sent to LA \u2018temporarily\u2019 but Trump reportedly not set to invoke Insurrection Act<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of active-duty US marines are to be deployed in Los Angeles, the US military confirmed on Monday, making good on\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s threat<\/a>\u00a0to send more troops to the city to quash\u00a0protests<\/a>\u00a0against government immigration raids and deportations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the US Northern Command announced that a battalion of 700 marines had been activated to work with the roughly 2,100 national guard troops mobilized by the Trump administration to Los Angeles<\/a>, to help protect federal property and personnel, including federal immigration agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marines are moving from their base at\u00a0Twentynine Palms<\/a>\u00a0in southern California to the Los Angeles area. The move risked dramatically escalating tensions in a city on edge after four days of protests against the administration\u2019s immigration crackdown. As of Monday afternoon, the day\u2019s demonstrations had remained largely peaceful.

A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told news agency Reuters, said there was no expectation that Trump was, for now at least, about to invoke the Insurrection Act, as some critics had suggested. But the person added that the situation was \u201cfluid\u201d and might change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s press office called the mobilization of marines \u201ccompletely unwarranted, uncalled for, and unprecedented\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump is escalating this situation even further \u2013 deploying active duty Marines, the \u2018best of the best,\u2019 against their own countrymen in an American city,\u201d the office wrote in a follow-up post. \u201cCompletely unnecessary and only inflames the situation more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement<\/a>, LAPD chief Jim McDonnell said the department had not received \u201cany formal notification\u201d of the marines\u2019 activation and said the \u201carrival of federal military forces in Los Angeles \u2013 absent clear coordination \u2013 presents a significant logistical and operational challenge for those of us charged with safeguarding this city\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior ABC News senior national policy reporter Anne Flaherty wrote on X<\/a> that the troops would be \u201ctasked with a support role, helping law enforcement only\u201d, while Reuters quoted the official as saying they would be \u201cprotecting federal property and facilities\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twentynine Palms is home to US Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Two defense department officials confirmed the number of 700 to NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, Trump ordered 2,000 national guard troops to Los Angeles, which has seen three days of protests over raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, stated later the same day in a social media post<\/a> that marines from Camp Pendleton, about 100 miles south of Los Angeles, were on \u201chigh alert\u201d and were ready to be mobilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, amid a feud with Newsom over the legality of such a move, Trump said he would not hesitate to send more troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I didn\u2019t get involved, if we didn\u2019t bring the guard in \u2013 and we would bring more in if we needed it, because we have to make sure there\u2019s going to be law and order \u2013 you had a disaster happening \u2026 they were overwhelmed, you saw what was happening,\u201d the president said at a White House roundtable focused on business investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s lucky for the people in Los Angeles and in California that we did what we did. We got in just in time. It\u2019s still simmering a little bit, but not very much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsom, meanwhile, called Trump\u2019s deployment of national guard troops in response to the largely peaceful protests an \u201cunmistakable step toward authoritarianism\u201d, as well as being \u201cillegal and immoral\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery governor, red or blue, should reject this outrageous overreach,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is beyond incompetence. This is him intentionally causing chaos, terrorizing communities, and endangering the principles of our great democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Bonta, the California attorney general, announced on Monday the state would file a lawsuit against the Trump administration for \u201cunlawfully\u201d federalizing the state\u2019s national guard and deploying its troops to quell the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in Monday\u2019s White House meeting, Trump insisted he had not yet made up his mind about sending marines. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d he said when asked directly if he would do so.

\u201cI think we have it very well under control. I think it would\u2019ve been a very bad situation, it was heading in the wrong direction \u2013 it\u2019s now heading in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some veterans have criticized Trump\u2019s decision<\/a> to deploy national guard troops, warning he risked turning the traditionally neutral US military into a partisan political force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the politicization of the armed forces,\u201d Maj Gen Paul Eaton told the Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt casts the military in a terrible light \u2013 it\u2019s that man on horseback, who really doesn\u2019t want to be there, out in front of American citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News said Monday that about 300 national guard troops were already in Los Angeles, with the remainder set to arrive by Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US military personnel are prohibited from performing law-enforcement activities inside the country unless the president has invoked the Insurrection Act, an 1807 act of Congress that permits the federalization of national guard troops and deployment of standing units of the armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was most recently invoked by President George HW Bush in May 1992 to suppress riots following the acquittal of Los Angeles police officers for beating the Black motorist Rodney King.
