Donald Trump<\/a> said on Saturday he did not warn car industry executives against raising prices as tariffs on foreign-made autos come into force, telling NBC News he \u201ccouldn\u2019t care less\u201d if they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president\u2019s comments came as the White House prepared to impose new tariffs on a range of consumer goods on 2 April, a move that has drawn criticism from international leaders and concerns about potential price increases for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those to express concern on Sunday about Trump\u2019s devotion to tariffs was US senator Rand Paul<\/a>, Trump\u2019s fellow Republican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInternational trade since [the second world war] has made us phenomenally rich,\u201d Paul said on The Cats Roundtable on New York\u2019s WABC 770 AM. \u201cHe says, \u2018We\u2019ve been taken advantage of.\u2019 But I really strongly disagree because trade has made us so rich and really has made the world a better place.

\u201cThe more we trade \u2026 the less we fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the NBC News interview, Trump said his permanent tariffs on foreign-made automobiles would be a boost to US-domiciled factories and was confident the move would lead to increased sales of American-made cars. \u201cI hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, who won a second White House term during November\u2019s presidential election part by promising voters that he would lower consumer prices, maintained that he would only consider negotiating on the tariffs \u201cif people are willing to give us something of great value\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tariffs are part of Trump\u2019s efforts to promote American manufacturing and reduce the country\u2019s trade deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s trade policies have been a key focus of his presidency, with ongoing tensions with major trading partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, a CBS News poll<\/a> found that 52% of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling the economy. About 55% of the poll\u2019s respondents said Trump\u2019s focus on tariffs was \u201ctoo much\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
