The president of the leading trade group representing broadcast journalists is blasting former President Trump over his continued threats<\/a> against some of the nation\u2019s largest news networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curtis LeGeyt, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, suggested Tuesday in a statement to The Hill that Trump\u2019s repeated attacks on networks such as\u00a0CBS<\/a>,\u00a0ABC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0NBC<\/a>\u00a0could have a chilling effect on independent journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom our country\u2019s beginning, the right of the press to challenge the government, root out corruption and speak freely without fear of recrimination has been central to our democracy,\u201d LeGeyt wrote in the statement. \u201cTimes may have changed, but that principle \u2013 enshrined in the First Amendment \u2014 has not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe threat from any politician to revoke a broadcast license simply because they disagree with the station\u2019s content undermines this basic freedom,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has in recent weeks threatened to investigate or bring lawsuits against a number of broadcast networks over their coverage of him and the 2024 presidential race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His campaign is relentlessly pressuring CBS News to release a full transcript<\/a> of a recent interview it aired with Vice President Harris, which he is claiming<\/a> was edited to cast her in a favorable light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former president also railed against ABC over\u00a0how the network\u2019s moderators<\/a>\u00a0handled a debate\u00a0between the two candidates<\/a>\u00a0last month, suggesting the network have its broadcasting license pulled.

Trump has also attacked Comcast Corp., the parent company of NBC News and MSNBC, over coverage of him he has said amounts to \u201ctreason.\u201d

Last week, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a similar statement<\/a> pushing back on Trump\u2019s suggestions that broadcast networks be punished over coverage of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage,\u201d FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A CNN analysis\u00a0published this week<\/a>\u00a0found Trump has threatened news and cable networks more than a dozen times in recent weeks as he has campaigned for president, stoking concerns he could seek retribution against journalists that are critical of him if he is elected in November.
