After Vice President\u00a0Kamala Harris<\/a>\u00a0accused former President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cbackpedaling\u201d on a debate, the Trump campaign said Thursday it would not commit to any future debates until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Joe Biden\u2019s decision to step down from the Democratic ticket on Sunday<\/a> threw previous debate plans into doubt. While the Biden and Trump campaigns had agreed to a debate hosted by ABC on September 10, it is unclear if it will go on as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,\u201d Harris told reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews Thursday. \u201cNow it appears he\u2019s backpedaling. But I\u2019m ready. And I think that the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage and so, I\u2019m ready. Let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steven Cheung, Trump\u2019s campaign communications director, said in a statement late Thursday that it \u201cwould be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds,\u201d since Harris is only the party\u2019s presumptive nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harris quickly hit back on social media. \u201cWhat happened to \u2018any time, any place\u2019?\u201d she said in a post on X.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic delegates are expected to vote virtually<\/a> to confirm Harris as the party\u2019s nominee by August 7. Trump, for his part, officially clinched the Republican nomination last week at the Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump told reporters earlier this week he wants to debate Harris but has not yet agreed to anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t agreed to anything. I agreed to a debate with Joe Biden,\u201d Trump said on a press call. \u201cBut I want to debate with her, and she\u2019ll be no different because they have the same policies. I think debating is important for a presidential race, I really do. You sort of have an obligation to debate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden\u2019s exit from the race came weeks after a disastrous performance at the CNN debate last month. He endorsed Harris shortly after his announcement, and the vice president quickly\u00a0racked up enough delegate endorsements<\/a>\u00a0to win the Democratic presidential nomination. While those endorsements are not binding, Harris is still the favorite to take Biden\u2019s place.
