{"id":4130,"date":"2024-04-29T00:58:29","date_gmt":"2024-04-29T07:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/?p=4130"},"modified":"2024-04-29T00:58:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-29T07:58:31","slug":"screaming-and-scuffles-between-opposing-protest-groups-at-ucla-after-demonstrators-cross-barrier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abovecloud.xyz\/?p=4130","title":{"rendered":"Screaming and scuffles between opposing protest groups at UCLA after demonstrators cross barrier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demonstrators<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>breached a security barrier meant to keep opposing protest groups apart on UCLA&#8217;s campus on Sunday and the two sides came<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>face-to-face, at times screaming at one another and shoving back and forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/digital-images\/org\/b235da3b-e005-4a0a-899b-d347dd40f8fb.jpeg\" alt=\"Pro-Israel counter-protesters gather during a demonstration in support of Palestinians at UCLA in Los Angeles on April 28. \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CNN team was on the ground watching the crowd, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators had gathered to support an\u00a0encampment\u00a0protesting Israel&#8217;s military campaign in Gaza, and a group of counter-protesters draped in Israeli flags had erected a video screen and speaker set up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVery high passions on both sides, and when these two come together we have seen confrontations,\u201d CNN\u2019s Camila Bernal reported from the campus.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople who are screaming at each other, sometimes shoving and pushing, and it does get violent at times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizers from each group told Bernal that they were trying to keep the peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CNN team had seen police officers in riot gear standing at a distance<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>from&nbsp;the crowd, but university officials said police would not intervene unless they felt students were in harm\u2019s way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school\u2019s vice chancellor for strategic communications, Mary Osako, confirmed that demonstrators had \u201cbreached\u201d a barrier between the groups and that there were \u201cphysical altercations\u201d between protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUCLA has a long history of being a place of peaceful protest, and we are heartbroken about the violence that broke out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Demonstrators\u00a0breached a security barrier meant to keep [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":4131,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[1999,1997,1998],"class_list":["post-4130","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-usa","tag-between","tag-screaming","tag-scuffles"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.0 -
